Trench backfilling
Standard
For backfilling of trenches with TSHD's, the sand in the hopper is pumped through the suction tube and draghead, hanging above the trench. The hopper load is spread over the trench while the TSHD sails along the track.
This classical working methodology is not efficient at all when using the same drag head for filling and unloading of the hopper. Obvious reason is that dredging and backfilling are two complete different activities. Therefore, the losses when backfilling with a standrad drag head are very important, resulting in a high execution costs and high environmental impact during backfilling operations.
Attempts have been done to make quick modifications on the draghead between the two different operations to reduce the losses but this is still not efficient, safe nor practical in operation.
