Hard rock - TSHD Standard
Rock dredging by TSHD fitted with a standard draghead is impossible as the teeth can not penetrate the rock to start ripping. In very soft rock (< 5 MPa UCS), production is possible by using pick points as those teeth will be able to get some penetration, depending on the weight of the head. But in general, this means trouble:

-
production will be very low compared to the size of the dredger

-
cutting depth is not controlled and will generate very high forces on the pick points, resulting in high teeth consumption

-
cutting forces will fluctuate a lot, resulting in very high reaction forces on the head and suction tube. This will damage the head and pipe of the dredger

Nevertheless, a TSHD that can dredge hard rock, can be a lot more economical than a CSD. Therefore, Innovate2Dredge has various concepts that can help a TSHD to dredge hard rock in an economical way
